PCFD Challenge Coin
Meaning behind the PCFD challenge coin:
Front:
- Department patch - Click on the patch to see it's meaning.
- Kickin' Ash Between the Lakes - Polk City is unique in that the town lies between
Salyorville and Big Creek Lakes...literally meaning that the Polk City Fire Department kicks
ash between two lakes.
- 24-7-365 - We are always on call.
- Six stars (three on each side) - The stars stand for the three divisions within our department:
Fire Division, EMS Division & Training Division. It also represents the six pillars of the PCFD
mission statement, "The mission of the Polk City Fire Department is to minimize the loss of life
and property of our residents and neighbors through education, prevention, and by delivering the
highest level of fire and emergency medical services.".

- American flag - Proud to be an American!
- Iowa flag - Our location...Polk City, Iowa.

History of the Challenge Coin
The challenge coin started within the military ranks but soon became a firefighter tradition. East
coast firefighters started using the challenge coins due to the large east coast military influence
