Featured Member of the Month

Engineer Jason Back grew up in the small suburban town of Dunkerton, Iowa which is just north of the Waterloo – Cedar Falls metropolitan area. He graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1990 (which by the way has K through 12 in the same building)…Go Raiders!

Jason has a sister Kim in Dunkerton with his niece Kayla and nephew Jonathon. Step brother Dean in Wisconsin and a step brother Steven in West Des Moines. His mom Jeanine and step dad Jim live in Wisconsin and Jason’s dad Charlie and step mom Bonnie live in Waterloo.

He loves the outdoors…anything to do with hunting or fishing, Jason enjoys doing. Next month he will be married to Lieutenant Peg Back for seven years. To her own admission “He is the best husband in the world.” He has a step son Josh who will follow in his footsteps soon. They have 2 dogs, Fancy (Pomeranian) and Jager (German Shorthair) and one cat, Comet (yep…named after the North Polk Comets).

Jason wears many different hats. His full time job he is a Controller with the local business Total Quality, whom is very supportive of Engineer Back going on calls while he is working. He also officiates high school basketball, football, softball and baseball. Next season he will be making the next step in officiating and he will be officiating NCAA Division III women’s college basketball. The Beavers, Dutch, Duhawks, Norse, Storm and Knights better watch out because he gets teased by his officiating friends from giving too many technicals and ejecting a lot of people. Lastly he is a Business Development Manager for Woodstream Travel whom coordinates Firefighter / EMS cruises.

Engineer Back and Lieutenant Back have been on 4 cruises themselves and are scheduled to go on their 5th cruise in November 2010. Jason took up SCUBA diving so while he is out on the cruises he enjoys searching for lost treasure. Note: Always look before you jump! Jason has dove in 5 different countries which corresponds to Peg shopping in…5 different countries?

During his time spent at the Polk City Fire Department he is a medic and engineer. He recently received his Emergency Medical Technician – Basic certification and plans on going forward to get Paramedic Specialist (or it may be highly encouraged by Lt. Peg Back). Some of his other certifications include Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper and Ice Rescue Specialist. He is also the Maintenance Coordinator for the PCFD.

Engineer Back is always first to arrive at the station and has been accused many times of sleeping with his clothes on or sleeping at the station. Neither one is true. His wife can attest to the second and certain members of the Polk City Fire Department witnessed a call were Engineer Back showed up to the station wearing his underwear on the outside of his shorts! There is a picture floating around and he paid enough to not have it posted, sorry (unless there is a counter-offer)!
