PCFD Patch
Change...we needed change! The old patch started off being the State of Iowa with Saylorville Lake,
and over the years and through various vendors reproducing the patch it started to look like Pennsylvania.
It was time for a change. First, we wanted to incorporate the two divisions that make up the
Polk City Fire Department, fire and emergency medical services. Second, we wanted to bring some flair
to the department. Finally, we wanted to bring respect and pay tribute to New York City Fire Department
(FDNY) and to the 343 that lost their lives trying to save others!
The patch was put into service in 2005.
Meaning behind the PCFD Patch:
- Shape of the patch - Closely matches the FDNY's patch.
- Black border - Represents authority, power and a united force.
- White background - Represents the innocence and purity of our patients.
- Blue banners - Stand for the loyalty that each member provides to the City of Polk City and it's brotherhood.
- Fire & Rescue (top banner) - Signifying both divisions "Fire" & "EMS".
- EST. 1946 (bottom banner) - Year the Polk City Fire Department was incorporated - The city had a bucket brigade prior but it was not under the City of Polk City.
- Maltese Cross - Symbol of protection and a fireman's badge of honor, signifying that he works in courage, a ladder rung away from death.
- Star of Life - The symbol's six-barred cross represents the six-system function of the EMS: Detection; Reporting; Response; On Scene Care; Care in Transit; Transfer to Definitive Care. The staff in the center of the symbol represents medicine and healing.
- Double axe - Represents valor and courage.
- On Call 24/7 - PCFD is always ready.
- Flames - Firefighters don't back down to flames.
